Order of the Anchor
A link is not a button.
A small society for people who believe that if it goes somewhere, it should be an href.
Our cause
Somewhere along the way, links stopped being links. They became <div>'s with click handlers, buttons pretending to navigate, and spans that know where they are going but will not tell you.
We would like the anchor back.
What we believe
- Links go places. use
<a href>. - Buttons do things. Use
<button>. - Middle-click is a human right. So is right-click, "Copy link", and opening fifteen tabs you will never read.
- The status bar should know. Hover over a link and see where it goes.
- JavaScript is welcome. It just should not be the foundation of a link.
Why it matters
A real link works for everyone:
- Screen readers announce it properly
- Keyboards can reach it
- Browsers can prefetch, bookmark, and share it
- It still works when the script fails to load
